Our Poly Bio® yarns, developed with Primaloft Bio®, biodegrade exclusively through hydrolytic degradation, the destruction of plastics by exposure to moisture under certain conditions, resulting in the breaking of molecular bonds. Our Poly Bio® yarns break down in landfills and oceans at a greatly accelerated rate, returning to naturally occurring materials. Under accelerated test conditions, PrimaLoft® Bio™ yarns achieved near-complete biodegradation in less than two years, while standard polyester remained virtually intact.
At the end of the biodegradation process, the yarns are transformed into materials found in nature (water, CO2, biomass humus, methane), and tests have shown that the remaining soil does not contain plastic and remains perfectly suitable for plant growth. Thanks to the above features, biodegradable yarns do not break down during use. They have a normal shelf life without requiring special care or processing during storage and transportation.
Biodegradable yarns, which emerged as a collaboration between Polyteks and Primaloft Bio® brand, are a technology that enables polyester yarns and fabrics to biodegrade* and return to materials found in nature extremely quickly, reducing the long-term impact of plastic waste on the environment and microplastic pollution in our oceans. *93.8% biodegradation in 646 days under ASTM D5511 conditions (accelerated storage environment); *86.1% biodegradation in 1563 days under ASTM D6691 conditions (accelerated marine/ocean environment). Our Poly Bio® yarns break down in landfills and oceans at a greatly accelerated rate, returning to naturally occurring materials. Under accelerated test conditions, PrimaLoft® Bio™ yarns achieved near-complete biodegradation in less than two years, while standard polyester remained nearly intact. Poly Bio® yarns do not biodegrade in use. They only biodegrade in environments where naturally occurring microbes are present, such as landfills, oceans, and wastewater. Therefore, they have a normal shelf life without requiring special care or handling during storage and transportation.
Poly Bio® yarns have the same properties and performance as regular PET yarns and are well compatible with natural fibers.
I am sharing the test results obtained according to ASTM requirements in the appendix. Primaloft has subjected many products to biodegradability tests at independent testing organizations.
The data comes from them.
Biodegradation Test | ASTM D5511
Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastics Under
High-Solids Anaerobic Digestion Conditions
The ASTM D5511 test method determines the degree and rate of anaerobic
biodegradation (without the presence of oxygen) of synthetic plastic materials in a high-solids, static inoculum. PrimaLoft® Bio™ polyester achieved 93.7% biodegradation in 646 days under ASTM D5511 conditions.
Biodegradation Test | ASTM D6691
Standard Test Method for Determination of Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials in the Marine Environment by a Defined Microbial Consortium or Natural Seawater Inoculum.
The ASTM 6691 test method determines the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of synthetic plastic materials exposed to marine microorganisms found in natural seawater. PrimaLoft® Bio™ polyester achieved 86.1% biodegradation over 1563 days under ASTM D6691 conditions.
